On 8 September, the PROTEGO team in Nigeria returned to Nsidung, Calabar, for the second round of marine litter monitoring. Community volunteers were guided through the monitoring methodology, covering site selection, transect demarcation, plastic characterization and data recording using the Ocean Eye app.

Returning to the same location and applying the same methodology allows findings to be compared across monitoring rounds, changes in plastic pollution to be tracked over time, and reliable data to be built in support of local interventions and informed decision-making. With the second round completed, the dataset continues to grow, alongside the capacity of the local team to carry out consistent and scientifically grounded monitoring.
