Site Visit in Ghana

Following the workshop, the PROTEGO team conducted site visits across multiple locations to assess environmental challenges and potential intervention areas. The team visited plastic-infested banks in Anlo-Afiadenyigba, where municipal waste is being used as an unconventional method to reclaim land lost to rising tides, highlighting the need for sustainable waste management and innovative land reclamation strategies. They also visited the turtle nesting beach in Ningo-Prampram, affected by plastic pollution, alongside representatives from the District Assembly, focusing on potential solutions to protect marine biodiversity. Additionally, the team explored hotspots in the Ada-East District Assembly, where waste management and marine pollution are pressing concerns, engaging key stakeholders to discuss possible solutions. In the Tema Metropolitan Area, the team made a meaningful stop at the Tema Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a key partner in the PROTEGO initiative, where discussions centered on ongoing and future strategies to reduce marine litter and enhance environmental governance. A potential hotspot in Tema Metropolitan Area was also identified, emphasizing the urgency of addressing pollution in this critical region.
