WP4: Awareness on Marine Litter
Content

Work Package 4 of the PROTEGO project is dedicated to raising public awareness about marine litter, its causes, and the vital role of community involvement in preventing plastic pollution. While technical and policy interventions are critical for long-term impact, they must be matched by a deep shift in public understanding and behavior. WP4 recognizes that people across all sectors residents, students, vendors, tourists, and informal workers often lack clear information on how daily waste habits contribute to marine pollution. This work package addresses that gap by designing and implementing community-based education and outreach campaigns that are locally relevant, accessible, and inclusive. In Ghana and Nigeria, these campaigns have taken many forms: school visits and environmental education sessions, beach clean-up events, mural art on waste prevention, and stalls at local markets and festivals. Social media posts, flyers, radio shows, and storytelling formats were also used to extend the reach of the message. A key focus of WP4 is to not only deliver information but also foster ownership and motivation among citizens. For example, community volunteers were involved in beach litter monitoring exercises, helping them see firsthand the scale and types of pollution affecting their surroundings. This citizen science approach serves the dual purpose of generating data for the project while building environmental consciousness in local communities. WP4 also strengthens collaboration with civil society organizations, faith groups, schools, and youth clubs, recognizing that these institutions are powerful amplifiers of change. Local artists and cultural leaders were engaged to help tailor environmental messages in ways that resonate with local norms and language. Ultimately, this work package enables people to become active participants in the solution to marine litter not just bystanders. By equipping communities with the knowledge, tools, and motivation to change behaviors and demand better systems, WP4 lays the groundwork for a culture of environmental responsibility that extends far beyond the project’s duration.
