The PROTEGO project is structured around interconnected work packages designed to systematically tackle marine litter and strengthen waste management systems in the Gulf of Guinea, with a particular focus on Nigeria and Ghana. Work Package 1 sets the foundation through thorough analysis and stakeholder mapping to understand the existing regulatory, institutional, and waste management landscapes. Work Package 2 focuses on advancing policies, strengthening governance, and fostering regional cooperation by supporting the development and implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes. Work Package 3 emphasizes capacity building through tailored training programs, workshops, and knowledge exchange platforms to empower local actors with the skills and tools needed for effective waste management and marine litter prevention. Finally, Work Package 4 supports practical pilot activities and local initiatives, providing hands-on experience in applying best practices and innovations for sustainable waste management. Together, these work packages create a comprehensive, multi-level approach to reducing marine litter and enhancing circular economy efforts in the region.
