Beach Sampling and Citizen Science in Ada, Ghana
In March 2025, as part of the PROTEGO Project, the team embarked on a field mission to Ada, one of Ghana’s most affected marine litter hotspots, to conduct comprehensive beach sampling and waste stream analysis. This activity aimed to generate critical insights into the types, sources, and movement of marine litter along the coast. Supported by the Ada East District Assembly, community members, and local volunteers, the fieldwork blended scientific rigor with grassroots engagement. Volunteers participated in the sampling process, helping the team collect and categorize waste while sharing local knowledge about environmental issues. These combined efforts reflect PROTEGO’s citizen science approach, emphasizing that sustainable solutions begin with empowering communities.
The Ada sampling exercise serves a dual purpose: it not only produces hands-on data essential for designing interventions but also builds environmental awareness and local ownership of marine conservation efforts. Through active participation, the community is directly contributing to cleaner coasts and healthier ecosystems.
