On 12 February 2026, PROTEGO and the Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Environment convened key stakeholders in Abuja to validate the draft "Policies, Institutional Set-up and Financing of Marine Litter Prevention in Nigeria." The document, formally endorsed at the workshop, outlines a 2025–2040 roadmap centered on unified inter-agency coordination, mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and innovative financing mechanisms to strengthen coastal waste infrastructure.

The event brought together representatives from NESREA, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN), the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Clean Tech Hub Nigeria, Nestlé Nigeria, the University of Abuja, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and media partners. Their collective endorsement represents a clear shift from dialogue to tangible, coordinated action in the fight against marine and coastal pollution.
