PROTEGO Conducts First Beach Litter Monitoring Exercise in Ajegunle, Nigeria
On 30 and 31 March, the PROTEGO team in Nigeria was in Ajegunle to carry out the first round of beach litter monitoring under the project.
Before heading to the shoreline, team members completed a structured training session covering the full beach sampling methodology. The team then collected all visible marine litter within a defined transect, transported it to the characterization site, and sorted it by material category. Each group was counted, weighed, and recorded directly into the Ocean Eye app.
Over the coming months, the team will return to the same site for up to four additional sampling rounds, following the exact same protocol, and building the consistent, comparable dataset needed to track changes in plastic pollution over time and inform effective policy responses.
