The PROTEGO team recently visited Ada, Ghana, to carry out the first round of beach litter monitoring under the project.

The first step was guiding community volunteers through a hands-on training session covering the full beach sampling methodology, including site selection, transect demarcation, plastic characterization, and data recording using the Ocean Eye app.

With the training complete, the team moved into the field. Volunteers collected all visible marine litter within a defined transect, transported it to the characterization site, and sorted it by material category, counting, weighing, and recording every item directly into the Ocean Eye app.
