On 24 June, the PROTEGO team in Ghana launched its Marine Litter Policy Brief at an event in Accra, bringing together stakeholders from different sectors to discuss the path forward for tackling plastic pollution along Ghana's coast. The launch marks a key milestone for the project, which works to strengthen marine litter prevention in Ghana.

The Policy Brief takes stock of the policies, institutions, and financing mechanisms shaping Ghana's response to marine litter, from international commitments such as UNCLOS and MARPOL to national measures like the National Plastics Management Policy. It maps the actors and initiatives driving progress, from Ghana's National Plastic Action Partnership to the Netcycle Africa fishing gear recovery scheme, while pinpointing the structural gaps holding the country back: fragmented institutional mandates, an underused Environmental Excise Tax fund, and waste collection that reaches only a third of households. Building on this analysis, the brief sets out five priority actions for policymakers, from activating the Plastic Waste Recycling Fund to establishing a national Marine Litter Task Force, offering a clear roadmap for turning ambition into results.
