National Policy Dialogue Charts Ghana’s Path Toward Marine Litter Prevention
On 8 July 2025, stakeholders from across government, civil society, academia, and the private sector convened at the Accra City Hotel for the PROTEGO National Policy Dialogue on Marine Litter Prevention in Ghana. The event marked a key milestone in the ongoing effort to co-create robust, cross-sectoral policy solutions to address the growing challenge of marine litter along the Gulf of Guinea. Hosted under the PROTEGO project, a three-year regional initiative funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMUV), the dialogue offered a collaborative space for knowledge sharing, strategy development, and networking. Participants engaged in focused group discussions, shared international and local best practices, and explored inclusive approaches to prevention, monitoring, and enforcement. The project brings together partners from Ghana, Nigeria, and Germany, including Plastic Punch and the Ghana National Cleaner Production Centre (Ghana), WASTE Africa and the Nigeria Climate Innovation Center (Nigeria), and is led by adelphi (Germany). The workshop not only facilitated the exchange of technical insights, but also strengthened alliances essential for building a resilient, policy-driven response to marine litter in the region. The outcomes of this dialogue will feed into national frameworks and regional cooperation mechanisms aimed at safeguarding coastal ecosystems and communities.
